Reflection paragraph on sources

I found my sources pretty easily. I think that the websites were the most helpful because i could find different kids of sources. I think that the encyclopedia would be the one that i trusted the most. The encyclopedia displayed very a obvious bias on my topic.

Reflection paragraph on process

My search was mainly pretty easy. I enjoyed looking at the pictures of skateboarding. I didn't like typing all of these paragraphs. I would do this project again and i would make my searches more detailed and tell more about the topic.

Reflection paragraph on findings

I think that the most important pieces to my research where the websites and articles that i used to find what i was looking for. I learned that skateboards are usually made from maple so that is a great fact. I was surprised to find out how many layers of wood that people use to make boards. I wood still like to find out where skateboarding came from. I fell like i can go make a skateboard and skate it like a professional.

Finding paragraph #3

Well there are basically just 7 or 8 main parts to a skateboard. There is the skateboard deck, wheels, bearing, trucks, bolts, screws, bushings, and/or risers. The skatboard deck is the wood. the wheels are what makes the board roll. the bearings are what gos in the wheels so they roll smoother. the trucks are what connects the wheels to the skateboard deck. the bolts and screws are what holds the board to the trucks. Bushings are rubber things that go in your trucks to make our ride smoother. Risers can be used to rise you board off of the ground, but you do not need them.

Finding paragraph #2

Well there are millions of tricks. A lot of the the tricks that you see are the ones that people have made up themselves. Personally, i think that doing tricks on the ground is easier than on a ramp. Other people like the ramps. Sometimes people will take a trick that they have already seen from somewhere and put their own twist to it. They could even name that trick if no one else has done it before.

Finding pargraph #1

Well there are two different styles in skateboarding. They are vert, which is with ramps, and street skating, which is on the ground and grinding rails and things in that nature. I am good at skating both on vert and street. I have found out that more people get in trouble for street skating than they do when they vert skate. Most of the injuries that come from skating is from street. most of the people try to ollie a stair or grind a rail and either break an ankle, leg, arm, or bust their head open.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #3

Quote: "Skateboarding is everything. It is a pastime, a sport, a hobby. A craze, an industry and a toy. A profession, an excuse, a game. A lifestyle, a distraction. It is a reason, not a crime."

Paraphrase: Skateboarding is many different thing. It is a pastime, a sport, a hobby, a craze, an industry, a toy, a profession, an excuse, a game, a lifestyle, and a distraction. It is a reason not to get in trouble and stay occupied, not a crime

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #2

Quote: "It's a little intimidating, but once you get over that hill, it's easy. Once you get over the fear, it becomes a lot easier."

Paraphrase: Once you get used to skateboarding and over your fears, than it becomes a lot easier to do tricks and other stuff

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #5

Quote: "You can skateboard on driveways, sidewalks, schoolyards, parking lots, and other paved surfaces. Most streetstyle skateboarding is done on concrete and asphalt. The surface can be flat or curved, smooth or rough. It can slope up a bank or run along the top of a wall. Whatever the surface, streetstyle skateboarders can find a way to get over it."

Paraphrase: People skateboard on just about anything. Driveways, sidewalks, schoolyards, parking lots and other paved surfaces are some of the things that people skateboard on. Street-skating is done on concrete or asphalt. It doesn't matter what you skate on, as long as you can get over it.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation#1

Quote: "In the 1970s, roller skates were made with urethane wheels. Urethane wheels were softer than clay wheels. They gripped the road better. They rolled over cracks and pebbles easily. A surfer named Frank Nasworthy thought the new wheels would be great for skateboards.

His idea started a new life for skateboarding. Skaters tried more tricks because they had better wheels. They began to jump up on park benches. They rode around inside empty swimming pools. They jumped over fire hydrants and parked cars. They pushed the limits of riding.

This new breed of skaters wanted better equipment. So skateboard makers stopped using roller-skate parts. Parts were made just for skateboards."

Paraphrase: In the 70's, people used roller skate wheels for their skateboards. Many people did this because the wheels were a lot smoother and went over cracks and rocks. A surfer named Frank Nasworthy actually was the first person to use the wheels and put them on his skateboard. After he put the wheels on his skateboard, others followed. They started to do more tricks and jump off of bigger things. Soon people made the wheels just for skateboards.

This picture shows what is used to make a skateboard. As you can see, it takes a lot of wood and epoxy to make a board.

Quote, Paraphrase, and Citation #4

Quote: "Early skateboards were different from boards today. They were flat, short, and stiff. The wheels were like roller-skate wheels. They were made of clay and were very hard.

The skater could not make tight turns. The wheels would stop turning when they hit a pebble or a crack in the sidewalk. Still, skateboarding was new and exciting. More than a million skateboards were sold.

Skating styles were pretty simple. Most skaters rushed down hills or weaved back and forth."

Paraphrase: The skateboards that people use today are much different from the ones that people used when skateboards first came out. The old skateboards were flat, short, ans stiff. They were so stiff that it made it hard to turn corners. Some wheels were clay and others are metal. If you hit a rock or crack with these, you would stop insantly and fly forward. even though it was simple, its was still fresh and new which made it exciting.

What i want to know about my topic

"My essential question is when and why was skateboarding invented?"
"What kind of wood is the best for skateboards?"
"Who invented it?"
"What did they use for it?"
"Where was it invented?"
"Why did they need it?"

What i alredy know bout my topic

I already know how to do a lot of tricks on a skateboard. I know that the skateboards now are different than the 70's or 80's. I know that there are skateboards with a lot of concave and others with none. I know this from talking to other skaters and skating myself.

The story behind my topic choice

Ever since I've been little, I've always loved skateboarding. I have been interested in the way people do tricks like kickflips or heelflips. I wonder how the people learned the tricks that they know. I would like to know where it was invented and why. Maybe they made it for fun.
